If You’re Doing These 3 Things, You Could Be Causing Your Own Pet Dander Problem

Pet dander causes allergies and asthma attacks for a lot of people. And keeping that pet dander under control is a constant battle, so you definitely don’t want to be doing anything to make it worse. Truth is, a LOT of pet owners cause pet dander levels to be unnecessarily high in their homes by doing and not doing certain things that cause your cat or dog to have irritated or allergic skin conditions that make them scratch and release more dander into your home.

First, how often you wash your pet is a big factor. Most indoor pets don’t need to washed more than every 7-10 days. This dries out their skin, causing more skin flakes and more scratching, which releases more dander onto the floor, furniture and into the air. Under washing is a problem, too. If you let your cat or dog go for too long without washing, usually more than 3 weeks, a similar thing happens—the skin builds up with dirt, dust (which contains dust mites, a powerful allergen) and this results in more scratching, too, and…more dander release.

Second, the type of cleaners you’re using to wash your pet can be something else that irritates the skin and causes more scratching and dander release. You want to use gentle cleaners that are hypoallergenic, not harsh. Use plain dish soap for example, and you’ll likely irritate a dog or cat’s skin, which will cause more scratching and dander.

Third, not keeping your home clean and free of dust allows dust mites to thrive and cause big problems for your pet. Dust mites are one of the strongest allergens known to man and an indoor pet that is laying on a dirty or dusty floor frequently is picking up a good dose of house dust, which on average contains about 200 live dust mites per gram of dust. So frequent vacuuming and using a quality air cleaner for dog hair, cat dander, etc can keep well over 95% of house dust off the floor and out of the air, which will go a long way toward keep cat and dog dander down—simply because they’re not scratching as much.
